The Cinerama Dome Gets A 1969 Makeover

Lots of speculation on what was brewing at the Cinerama Dome recently and IndieWire did some digging. They posted this article, which makes it seem like Quentin Tarantino’s next film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, might have filmed there. Several of our friends at Amoeba Music gave us a heads up to the makeover featuring signage for the 1969 film Krakatoa, East of Java, so we ran down to take some pictures.

Krakatoa, East of Java had its North American premiere in 70mm on May 14th, 1969, at the Cinerama Dome in Los Angeles. One of the stars, Sal Mineo, had a monthlong tribute at the New Beverly in May of 2017, including a rare screening of Krakatoa.  Read Kim Morgan’s blog on Sal Mineo here.

Enjoy the pictures and we have a feeling there will be many more sightings around Los Angeles, especially since Tarantino had this to say at CinemaCon earlier this year, “It takes place during the 1969 Hollywood era at the height of the counterculture explosion, at the time of the hippie revolution. During the summer, little by little, block by block, we’ll be transforming Los Angeles in the psychedelic Hollywood of 1969.”
