Double Feature

Double Harness
Ann Harding and William Powell lend a great dose of chemistry to this lively comedy about a woman who tricks a man into marriage – and only then tries to earn his love the old-fashioned way. Harding plays Joan Colby, a charming young schemer who believes “marriage is a business” and sets her sights on wealthy playboy John Fletcher (Powell). Once Joan slyly arranges for her father to spot her and John in a compromising situation, marriage is no longer an option – it’s a necessity. Smartly directed by John Cromwell, Double Harness was a critical and financial success upon its release; seen today; the movie seems at once modern and nostalgic, offering a vivid reflection of a sophisticated era in filmmaking. Peter Ibbetson
Screen legend Gary Cooper stars as Peter Ibbetson in this unique romantic drama based on the George du Maurier novel. Peter, a successful bachelor, feels no interest in a charming woman named Agnes (Ida Lupino), but longs for his childhood neighbor, Mary (Ann Harding). When he is commissioned by British royalty to rebuild some stables, he is delighted to find that the spirited duchess is actually his long-lost beloved. Her quick-tempered husband becomes violent when he discovers their past, but his jealousy is no match for their will to be together… even if it is only in a dream world of their creation. (Universal)
