Double Feature

Singapore
A heavy mix of the exotic and the romantic makes this pearl-smuggling-in-the-Orient melodrama a pleasure to watch. From the moment Matt Gordon (Fred MacMurray) enters the bar of a Singapore hotel and orders two gin slings (one for a lady who isn’t there), it’s clear that a stylish tale will follow. The lady is Linda (Ava Gardner), and a flashback shows them at the height of their passion. They were about to be married when an air raid killed Linda. Now Matt’s returned to Singapore, with his painful memories, for some hot pearls he had hidden there. He finds Linda not only alive, but married to another man (Roland Culver). She has amnesia – and her husband has no intention of losing her! The suave MacMurray and the glamorous Gardner have never been better. Nor have production values. Ceiling fans circle in shadowy settings. Light streams through bamboo blinds. And Danielle Amfitheatrof’s unforgettable music adds seductively to the film’s power. (Universal Studios)
