The Black Room (1935)

In a tiny European nation, a baron has fathered twin sons – Anton and Gregor – but a local legend has it that one will someday kill the other, so Anton is sent into exile while Gregor remains. Decades later, Gregor has become a tyrant; sensing revolution in the air, he summons Anton back to take over. But is that really what he has in mind? Starring none other than Boris Karloff as the brothers and the beautiful Marian Marsh (Crime and Punishment) as the love interest. Directed by Roy William Neill, best known for the Sherlock Holmes 1940s classics, this gothic tale treads the line between horror and suspense while taking a page from Alexandre Dumas. The Boogie Man Will Get You

Two cinematic legends – Boris Karloff (Frankenstein) and Peter Lorre (Casablanca) – join forces in a movie that combines spine-tingling thrills with slapstick comedy. Karloff stars as bumbling scientist Nathaniel Billings, whose experiments have led to the deaths of several traveling salesmen, leaving their bodies piling up in the cellar. When a young divorcee (Jeff Donnell, Sweet Smell of Success) buys the professor’s house to create a hotel, it’s only a matter of time before suspicions arise. The town’s sheriff/doctor/loan shark (Lorre) looks to stop Billings but sees the financial gain and becomes his partner instead. Will the doctor’s experiments be stopped before more bodies get added to the cellar? (Sony Pictures)
