A film about a bunch of people in Virgil, Texas. Multifaceted musician David Byrne helms his sole directorial feature, a beautifully surreal slice of Americana that focuses on a town’s lovably eccentric locals as they prepare for a celebration marking the state’s sesquicentennial. Offbeat humor, Talking Heads tunes, an eclectic ensemble cast (John Goodman, Swoosie Kurtz, Spalding Gray, ‘Pops’ Staples, ‘Tito’ Larriva, and Byrne himself), and truly gorgeous Ed Lachman cinematography make for an experience like no other.
