“We just finished making a movie dealing with the most talked-about subject of the day: LSD,” Peter Fonda says in the trailer for Roger Corman’s The Trip, a wild, eyes-wide-open journey into the thick of the 60’s counterculture. Fonda stars as a TV commercial director who takes a drug with the assistance of bearded guide (Bruce Dern) and shirtless dope dealer (Dennis Hopper) to make sense of the explosive changes happening in his outer and inner world. The normally straight-laced Corman experimented with acid as research for the production and encouraged screenwriter Jack Nicholson to base the script off the drug’s associative nature. The film was a huge success (by Corman standards) and is arguably his greatest directorial achievement.
