The Suspect

Director Robert Siodmak follows milquetoast accountant, Phillip (Charles Laughton) as he falls-in-love with prospective employee, Mary (Ella Raines), a wish-dream alternative to his nagging wife. Driven to distraction by his wife’s suspicions, he is relieved when she falls down the stairs to her death. Accidental? Or premeditated murder? Unsure, the police inspector on the case bides his time. But an unscrupulous neighbor (Henry Daniell), certain Phillip is guilty, hatches a blackmail plot, something which may lead to his own demise. Caught up in the escalating bad dream is Mary, who soon becomes Phillip’s second wife. Motion Picture Magazine gave the film a rave review, saying “Brilliantly directed by Robert Siodmak, who draws from Charles Laughton what is undoubtedly one of the finest characterizations of the latter’s career, all combine to make The Suspect a superb thriller.”
