A bleak and elegant horror, The Changeling stars George C. Scott as a composer who relocates to a secluded mansion after the death of his wife and daughter, only to find it inhabited by the restless spirit of a child murdered there many decades prior. Scott gives one of his most accomplished performances, playing someone troubled by more than just grief, and Melvyn Douglas throws his weight around as a powerful senator with ties to the haunted home. This tasteful ghost story is both unrelentingly suspenseful and impressively atmospheric, with camera nimbly gliding through the house, making a strong character out of the possessed setting, including most terrifying chair in a movie since Psycho.
