The Case Against Brooklyn is not an anti-gentrification screed, but a hard-hitting docu-noir which purports to be based on true stories of the borough’s corruption in the 50’s. A far-reaching gambling syndicate has a shocking amount of the police force in their pocket, and its up to an ex-Marine officer with integrity to go in deep undercover and risk everything to discover how far the money goes. This mean, hard-boiled tale of good cops and bad cops prefigures elements of The Godfather trilogy and depicted the mythology of American streets when words like “mafia” and “syndicate” were relatively new to the wider popular culture.
