The Bitter Tea of General Yen

During the crux of the Chinese Civil War, an American missionary (Barbara Stanwyck) is taken prisoner at the command of the warlord General Yen. As an undeniable bond begins to form between hostage and host, the missionary’s faithfulness and compassion will be challenged. Frank Capra’s depiction of an interracial relationship was a historic decision to endorse to U.S. audiences who would not see interracial marriages legalized for another 34 years following The Bitter Tea of General Yen’s release.
