Jackie Gleason plays a reformed gangster called back into service to knock off his old friend (Mickey Rooney) in Otto Preminger’s bizarre, all-star, acid-fueled counterculture comedy Skidoo. With his target behind bars, he’ll have to get locked up to knock off his quarry. But when he accidentally ingests LSD while in the big house, it triggers a hallucinatory head trip that hatches an elaborate escape plan that balloons into even bigger trouble. It’s a surreal and outlandish oddity of youth culture hippie hilarity seemingly made by a filmmaker out of touch with the times. Yet it retains a hypnotic allure that really must be seen to be believed.
