Shirkers (Sandi Tan In Person)

Filmmaker Sandi Tan will join us IN PERSON, schedule permitting, to discuss!

Exclusive, one-of-a-kind 35mm print! Sandi Tan’s personal, poetic documentary weaves an incredible story: in 1992 Singapore, a teenage Tan and her friends shot an independent road movie with their enigmatic American mentor. But when the girls left to study abroad after the film’s wrap, their mysterious collaborator disappeared with their footage. Now after two decades, Tan pushes forward to find out what happened and what could have been. Shirkers won the 2018 World Cinema Documentary Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival and is one of the best films of the year.

“An exuberantly dreamy grrl-power-meets-noir crime story” – Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter

“Director Sandi Tan puts together a magical documentary about an unrealized film project that celebrates the power of youth and friendship” – Charlie Phillips, The Guardian

“A knotty detective yarn, a funny valentine to Singapore and one of the year’s most ardent expressions of movie love, it tells a story of cinematic theft, and in the process, becomes an entrancing feat of cinematic reclamation.” – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times
