An I.B. Technicolor treat, RIO LOBO is the final film directed by Howard Hawks and the last of his loose trilogy, which includes RIO BRAVO and EL DORADO. John Wayne is the classic Wayne that we have come to know and love through his decades worth of work. This time playing a Union Colonel, Cord McNally, in Hawks’ tale of good vs. evil. Wayne finds himself at odds with a corrupt sheriff while on the hunt for union soldiers that turned traitors at the end of the Civil War. He also gets caught up trying to help swindled ranchers get their land back. And all points collide in the town of Rio Lobo, Texas. Jack Elam, as Old Man Phillips, is enjoyable comic relief, Jerry Goldsmith provides the score and longtime Hawks collaborator, Leigh Brackett (THE BIG SLEEP), wrote the screenplay. Notable that Brackett also wrote for Hawks and Wayne the films RIO BRAVO, EL DORADO and HATARI!.
