This offbeat Rodgers & Hammerstein musical follows illegal Chinese immigrant and mail order bride Mei Li (Miyoshi Umeki) as she arrives in San Francisco only to be rejected by prospective hubby, nightclub owner Sammy Fong (Jack Soo) who is involved with his lead attraction, sexy Linda Low (Nancy Kwan). But Fong finds her and her elderly father lodging with an affluent Chinese-American family, who coincidentally have a son, Wang Ta (James Shigeta) of marriageable age. Complications ensue when Wang Ta also becomes enamored with Linda Low, and various hijinks by friends and family kick in to produce the desired result of Mei Li and Wang Ta ending up at the altar. Songs include the popular “I Enjoy Being a Girl,” which has since been covered by numerous singers, including Doris Day and Peggy Lee.
