Director Michael Winner teams up with Charles Bronson for the first of many collaborations (later to include The Mechanic and Death Wish). Bronson plays Chato, a halfbreed Indian who goes on the run after shooting a racist lawman in self-defense. Ex-Confederate veteran Jack Palance is the slightly unhinged, crafty head of the posse that is composed of milquetoasts and racists (a redneck family composed of gritty character actors Simon Oakland, Richard Jordan and Ralph Waite). Also co-starring the great James Whitmore. As the white men delve deeper into hostile territory (shot on location in Almeria, Spain) and perpetrate atrocities along the way – including the rape of Bronson’s wife – they inadvertently put their heads in Bronson’s ever-tightening noose. Before long the hunters become the hunted.
