In this sequel to the popular satire The Yuppie Fantasia, Leung Foon (Lawrence Cheng) and Ann (Carol Cheng) return as a working couple still trying to function in their bumpy relationship. All of their yuppie friends are doing their best to be monogamous but Leung Foon finds himself slowly falling for off-kilter colleague, Wendy (Rosamund Kwan), when they’re thrown together on a business trip to the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. With Brief Encounter in Shinjuku, filmmaker Chan maintains a delicate balance, gently seesawing back and forth between humorous juxtapositions and character quirks while focusing on the very real affections sprouting between two people who are valiantly trying to stay true to the social conventions of their peers.
