The Swinging Sixties

Want the perfect primer to watching Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood? Quentin Tarantino is partnering with Sony Pictures Television for a special package of ten films, personally selected by the filmmaker, that helped shape his new movie and represent the era in which it is set. New conversations with Tarantino and film writer, historian, and New Bev blogger Kim Morgan have been recorded (at the New Beverly!) to accompany the series. As reported by Deadline, the film series with premiere July 21-25 in the USA on the Sony Movie Channel, then air worldwide over the coming weeks timed to the international release dates for Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood.

The full lineup of films includes Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969; director: Paul Mazursky), Cactus Flower (1969; director: Gene Saks), Easy Rider (1969; director: Dennis Hopper), Model Shop (1969; director: Jacques Demy), Battle of the Coral Sea (1959; director: Paul Wendkos), Getting Straight (1970; director: Richard Rush), The Wrecking Crew (1968; director: Phil Karlson), Hammerhead (1968; director: David Miller), Gunman’s Walk (1958; director: Phil Karlson), and Arizona Raiders (1965; director: William Witney).

As patrons of Quentin Tarantino’s New Beverly Cinema in Los Angeles may recognize, many of these films have played recently at the theater in the run-up to Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood. On a special new episode of the Pure Cinema Podcast, the writer-director discusses programming the New Beverly and how their scheduling connects to his new movie.
