Hollywood Shuffle

Thirty years after its release, Robert Townsend’s Hollywood Shuffle remains a startlingly hilarious, no-holds-barred satire about being black in Hollywood. Townsend writes (with Keenen Ivory Wayans), directs, produces, and stars in one of the seminal low budget films of the decade, playing a struggling actor and hot dog stand employee, who has a series of incisive and caustically funny dreams that spoof African American stereotypes in the industry.

“The arrival of a new talent” – Roger Ebert

“Mr. Townsend has taken aim at the industry’s funny bone and struck a solid blow.” – Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“For a mere $100,000, Townsend and company have made a funny, poignant and technically proficient film – one that should thoroughly embarrass those studios that routinely offer up badly made, multimillion-dollar disasters.” – Richard Harrington, Washington Post
