Fanny and Alexander

Ingmar Bergman’s sumptuous familial epic looks at life through the eyes of two young siblings as they come of age and watch the ups and downs of their sprawling clan during turn-of-the-twentieth-century Sweden. Beautifully lensed by his frequent collaborator Sven Nykvist, Fanny and Alexander was intended to be the legendary director’s final film, and it remains one of his most universally acclaimed, winning four Academy Awards, including Best Foreign Language Film.

“A masterpiece.” – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

“The movie is astonishingly beautiful. The cinematography is by Bergman’s longtime collaborator Sven Nykvist.” – Roger Ebert

“Emerges as a sumptuously produced period piece that is also a rich tapestry of childhood memoirs and moods, fear and fancy, employing all the manners and means of the best of cinematic theatrical from high and low comedy to darkest tragedy with detours into the gothic, the ghostly and the gruesome.” – Variety
