Bob le Flambeur

Jean-Pierre Melville’s classic Bob le Flambeur is not just a heist film, it is the title character’s last heist film (a common thread it shares with Touchez Pas au Grisbi). Bob, played by Roger Duchesne, is a gambler and ex-con, having walked the straight and narrow for the past 20 years. But, when he learns the casino he frequents will have eight million dollars in its safe, he can’t resist one last heist. Melville, while influenced by American gangster films, realized his own vision in Bob le Flambeur, which includes cinematographer Henri Decae’s beautifully realistic Paris exteriors and seedy smoke-filled interiors, as well as Melville himself as the narrator. In French with English subtitles

“Jean-Pierre Melville’s Bob le Flambeur has a good claim to be the first film of the French New Wave.” – Roger Ebert
